RSS feeds are the technology behind the syndication, or automated update announcements, of websites. Through syndication, your favorite web sites can broadcast updated content directly to your computer, both saving you time and increasing the site's visibility.
News readers, or aggregators, are programs or websites which periodically check the list of RSS feeds you've selected from your favorite sites to let you know what's new. Typically, this also includes descriptions and links to the updated content. Currently-popular news readers include FeedDemon for Windows, NetNewsWire for Mac OS X, and Bloglines, a platform-neutral, web-based news reader. Other web-based news reader services include MyYahoo and Feedster.
