Harford Farm and Flower Market
Out standing in the field!
Harford Farm is a small family farm, one of very few--I know of 1 other--in the Scranton area to be certified organic by NOFA-NY Certified Organic LLC. We sell vegetables, fruit, herbs and a wide variety of cut flowers at the Cooperative Farmers Market of Scranton.
Available now, we've created a CSA option for 2014. You receive a $10 bonus for each $100 CSA share you purchase before April 1st. After April 1st the bonus is still a $5 voucher. You can email us for complete details.
We grow varieties for the best taste and nutrition, not because they ship well. We're always trialing new varieties, but the old heirlooms are a particular favorite. Since I start tomato plants from seed in a passive solar greenhouse, I can grow tomatoes like Brandywine, Orange Banana, Black Krim, and Green Zebra. I also grow rows of the favorite cherry (Sunsugar/Sungold) and every year try a few new types. Last year Indigo Rose tomato was a fantastic new addition. Our other specialties are salad mix and a variety of greens all year, and baby summer squash in all colors and shapes. And of course there are the cut sunflowers.
The vegetables being a bit late in Susquehanna County, we often have a wide assortment of potted herbs and container plants early in the year. The hoophouse has helped and the grow lights are already operating over trays of onions and leeks; peppers and tomato will be started next. The "outdoor" cat has again tried to take up residence on top of the heat mat in the cellar, but she will be banished soon. We’ll have sprouts, potted herbs, flowers, foliage plants and sometimes landscaping shrubs.
The market's opening day for 2013 was July 17th, so I anticipate they will stick with mid-July. As always, Geof and I welcome your suggestions, brochure requests, and offers to weed.

Mahoning Creek Farm
Mahoning Creek Farm is a diversified livestock and crops family farm in Indiana County. It has been in the family since 1918 and is now operated by the fourth generation of the McConaughey's. Located along Rt. 210 north of Plumville; Mahoning Creek Farm is a Pennsylvania preserved farm.
The farm continues to raise Duroc pigs and we have brought Hampshire pigs back to the farm. We also raise Dorset and Tunis sheep and also maintain a crossbred commercial ewe flock.
Registered Angus cattle round out the livestock. The Angus bloodlines are the same as Bob bred and managed at South Branch Farms in York County, PA for just under 20 years. You may recall South Branch Farms as a well known leader in quality Angus production in Pennsylvania. These genetics produce extremely high quality grass fed beef and we plan to market that from the farm in the near future.
Along with beef we plan to have pork available for sale from the farm. Many still remember coming to the farm meat market with their grandparents on a weekly basis to purchase their family's meat. Lamb will also round out the selection.
We are in the process of getting the proper permitting to legally sell meat at the farm.

Sand Springs Mt.Farms
Sand Springs Mt. Farms (A separate division of Sand Springs Farms)is nestled in the southern low lying mountains of Somerset County PA. The Farm is a small agro-business and a continual work in progress. The original farm is said to be over 250 years old. The farm offers products such as: Manure compost, feeder pigs(some from registered stock), roaster pigs and butcher swine. We sell our pork in wholes, halves, and quarters. We provide delivery from the farm to your butcher of choice within a 20 mile radius. We do deliver swine at farther distances, but at an added mileage rate. Our pigs are corn and soy fed, with a natural mineral(no junk additives). Our sows gestate on woodlot and farrow in a bank barn. Our piglets are raised to roaster or butcher size inside the barn on straw and hay bedded pack(we soon hope to have them on rotational pasture). We contract with local farmers for locally grown grains and bedding supplies. Our pigs are noted for producing a bit more fat in the muscle tissue. This small bit of extra fat ensures better flavoring of the meat, by your butcher of choice(which equals MMMMM-MMMM Good). "These are the pigs that your grand-daddy use to raise".
We provide certified organic and inorganic Nutrient Management Plan writing and consulting. We also do soil analysis and nutrient balance sheets for agriculture crops. We can help you decide where to move your manure or compost, to maintain crop production, and decrease commercial fertilizer usage. We are a small business that tries to keep the little person in mind.
I do not specialize in club pigs or fair pigs, Over the past 20 plus years I have sold many pigs to 4H members as a starter pig. Some pigs have proven well as a club starter pig and others end up as a “plain jane” butcher hog.(which equates to a lower cost pig). My operation consists of a 4 herd in one constant flow, which is better suited to produce "On your plate, Eaten Hogs" as opposed to club/fair pigs. We do vaccinate for all of the diseases associated with the club/fair industry. We are not associated with any county fair/club pig auction consortium( 4H is about the learning experience not the money). If you are interested in a starter club/fair pig, please call and make an appointment. Because of the more open bio-security system, of the club/fair pig industry, I now have to practice a closed bio-security system for club/fair pig buyers entering my operation. Please call or e-mail for directions.

At Yellowstone Farm our goal is to make available to the consumer the finest purebred grass fed Angus Freezer Beef. We have a closed herd of Registered Angus Cows. This means that we do not bring in other animals to our cow herd. Our animals are born and raised on our farm. Our young animals are allowed to nurse off of their mothers and learn to forage grass, until we wean them in the fall. During this period, they are growing fast and developing strong bones and muscles. By the time that they are weaned they have learned to forage grass and eat hay (dried grass). The animal's water supply comes from a deep artisan well. The same well that my family uses for drinking water.
Yellowstone Farm is a Certified Beef Quality Assurance Producer. We do not use Hormones or Antibotics. When the steer are close to two years old they are sold as Freezer Beef. Customers can buy whole, half or (quarter animals when available). The animals are Custom Butchered, wrapped, frozen and delivered to the customers door. We take pride in our Quality Lean Grass Fed Angus Beef.
We also sell Breeding Stock when available.

Terry Peiper has been "Helping Horses With Their People" in south central PA for over 30 years as an accredited Richard Shrake Resistance Free ® Trainer/Instructor and certified American Riding Instructors Association (ARIA) Instructor giving lessons and clinics at her farm, Buck N Horse Hollow near Carlisle,PA.
Riding lessons/horse training sessions consist of a blend of the first phases of Classical Horsemanship and Richard Shrake's Resistance Free Training methods. The under saddle lesson plans emphasize the balanced seat, safety, rider position, control, timing, rhythm and the proper use of aids. In hand or groundwork sessions consist of proper leading, lunging and understanding horse psychology. Her students ride English or Western, some for show but mostly for pleasure.
Studying saddle ergonomics started out as just another way for Terry Peiper to help her students however, it quickly took over her life when she discovered that her own horse, Easy has a condition called kissing spine which was likely caused by many years of riding in poor fitting saddles. “I can’t go back and undo what I have done but I can spread the word about proper saddle fit to prevent other horses from needless suffering” says Terry.
Recognizing the huge need for proper saddle fit, Terry Peiper proudly joined up with Saddlefit 4 Life "A network of equine professionals dedicated to preventing horse and rider from long term damage" and passionately pursues her mission to educate as many riders as possible of the importance of proper saddle fit.
To be an effective rider, the saddle must place the rider's center over the horse's center so both can be balanced together. A saddle ergonomist interfaces the saddle, the horse and the rider together. Terry Peiper is certified by the Saddlefit 4 Life, a network of equine professionals working together to prevent long term damage to horses and their riders.
Services at Buck N Horse Hollow and at your barn within 100 miles include:

•Lessons & clinics with riders and their horses

We produce organic, grass-fed, ethically-raised lambs of superior genetic as well as culinary quality.
Restaurants are being challenged by their customers to offer the most natural possible product if it's available and to bring in the most local options that fit those criteria whenever possible. Our USDA- and Global Organic Alliance-certified organic, only grass-fed lamb will not only meet customers' expectations, but exceed them. Full Circle Organic Farm is the result of one woman's dream - a 5th generation farmer, trained chef and chef-educator - to meet the most rigorous culinary standards with an exquisitely-crafted lamb in texture and delicate flavor and to do so using impeccably-bred certified-organic animals on a USDA-certified organic farm. Our animals never have any hormones, antibiotics, or are exposed to any pesticides, herbicides or chemicals what so ever. Her combined culinary and animal husbandry knowledge and her devotion to elegant systems have touched every process of her farm. The ultimate goal for Full Circle Organic Farm (FCOF) would be to help the highest quality establishments1 meet its customer demand and surpass its customers' expectations for delicious, healthy, organic lamb through a partnership with our farm.
Our 360-acre farm will have 400 lambs this year and can have more to respond to market demand. We can provide them live FOB the farm; processed fresh or frozen FOB processor. We will be able to facilitate transportation as needed by our partners.
Our farm was and is USDA-certified Organic since 2009.
Our lambs are bred for loin length and rib eye size. The breed is what is called commercial white face ewe, which is genetically superior to purebreds as they have the quality of multiple genetic inputs. Specifically, what SuzAnne looks for in a ewe (and she is extremely selective in which ewes she keeps) is: good mothering and that encompasses four items. They keep excellent track of their young, they have ample milk, easy delivery and must be twins as Restaurants are being challenged by their customers to offer the most natural possible product if it's available and to bring in the most local options that fit those criteria whenever possible. Our USDA- and Global Organic Alliance-certified organic, Lamb are fed only grass and hay.

Living Hope Farm
Living Hope Farm is entering its fourth year as a non-profit, community-oriented agricultural farm. The farm began its transformation in 2010 from a historic farmstead into a vibrant Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm. Our CSA is known for producing safe, locally grown food, supporting the local economy, and allow persons to participate in the growing of their food. Members are able to interact with the farmers who grow the food and gain a new perspective on their food source and its nutritional value.
The CSA is the “engine” of the farm that fuels the Living Hope Farm Vision. Living Hope Farm has begun to help the Indian Valley community explore what it means to cooperatively raise food, to farm and manage livestock well in the 21st Century; to treat the land as a treasure, and to think of food as a sacred gift. Living Hope Farm desires to build new connections; moving from commodities to community – from fast food to fresh, local food – and from mindless eating to a respectful, just oriented way of sharing what is grown. We are committed to educating our community, tithing a portion of our produce grown and creating a relationship with the underserved. These interactions are connected to our mission of “Growing food, faith and community” and occur through our small class offerings, chef demonstrations, integration of differently abled persons on the farm, and our tithing initiatives.
Faith directed, sustainable agriculture and community gardening is building new kinds of connections
