About Us:

The Masser family has been farming in the Sacramento area since 1959 when Sterman and Geraldine Masser rented land in Sacramento owned by Sterman's uncle Ralph Masser. In 1967 Sterman and Gerri bought the farm, subsequently formed Sterman Masser Inc.(SMI) in 1970, and continued to expand the business. In 1976, their son Keith and his wife Helen joined the business. In 1984, Keith and Helen purchased SMI. In 1978, Keith expanded the potato storage and packing space in order to increase the fresh potato shipping segment of the business. Again, in 1990 the potato packing warehouse was expanded to incorporate a computerized packing line. The largest expansion came into full operation in early 2000. This expansion increased cooler and storage space to 1,000,000 square feet and added a state-of-the art washing, grading and packing facility. The summer of 2001 saw yet more expansion. A new storage facility was built, which has 14,000 square feet of additional cooler space, and additional equipment and packaging storage areas. Since 2000, SMI has been Superior rated for food safety by the American Institute of Baking.

Since taking over the business, Keith has continued to either purchase or rent additional land and currently farms approximately 3500 acres in Western Schuylkill and Upper Dauphin counties. In 2005, 650 acres were in potatoes, 1300 in corn, 600 in soybeans and 300 in wheat. Approximately 2000 acres of potatoes are grown for SMI in Florida, Michigan and North Carolina and Virginia.

The Masser packing shed is the largest and most advanced on the East Coast. The wash plant can easily process (unload and wash) 500,000 pounds of potatoes in a single shift. After being washed, potatoes are cooled, dried and conditioned in temperature and humidity controlled coolers. All potatoes are utilized on a first in, first out basis. After undergoing three levels of sizing and grading, potatoes are packed on one of five packing lines. Current packaging capabilities include 3, 5, 10, 15 and 20 pound paper and poly bags, 3,5 and 10 pound mesh bags, 50 pound paper bags and cartons and 1.5 pound clamshells. A recently added production line can also produce microwavable singles. All potato varieties (white, red, yellow, russet, purple) are distributed by SMI.

The signature Masser label is the Blue Denim brand.
