About Us:
VOLLMECKE ORCHARDS & CSA is a 37-acre family-owned farm and orchard growing a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. We operate a 150-share Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and offer retail sales as well. Crops and products offered: fruits, vegetables, fresh eggs, fruit butters, applesauce, honey, herbs, cut flowers and compost.
We grow all of our vegetables naturally, without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, genetically modified organisms or sewage sludge. We use crop rotation, cover crops and compost extensively to enrich our soil so it will support a teeming soil biology that, in turn, supports healthy plants. We describe this as "growing naturally."
In our orchards, we practice IPM (Integrated Pest Management), choosing to apply cultural techniques where possible rather than sprays. When we find it necessary to spray, materials are selected on the basis of safety, efficacy, and minimal impact to the environment.
At this time, we have chosen not to seek organic certification. Being "certified organic" would not change our growing practices, but it would add significantly to our paperwork and operating expenses and, therefore, to our share price and retail prices.
We feel that when you have trust in, knowledge of, and access to the farmers who grow your food, certification becomes unnecessary. Unlike purchasing produce at a grocery store, if CSA members or customers have questions about our growing practices, they are welcome to ask us directly. And they are welcome to visit the farm to see exactly where and how our crops are grown.
