Pennsylvania Strawberries

The first fruit to ripen in the Spring, strawberries are often considered to be the fruit that announces the coming of Summer.

On average, Americans eat 4.85 pounds of fresh and frozen strawberries each year. Ounce for ounce, strawberries have more Vitamin C than citrus fruit and are excellent source of dietary fiber, potassium, and Vitamin A. One cup of fresh, sliced strawberries contains only 50 calories.

The peak of the strawberry harvest in PA typically occurs in early June, but may vary due to location and weather patterns. In 2003, Pennsylvania strawberry producers grew 8.3 million pounds of strawberries on 1,300 acres of land.

There are many stories regarding the origin of the name "strawberry". One belief is that the name comes from the practice of spreading straw used to mulch the plants. Others believe that the name derived from the Anglo-Saxon verb "to strew" (spread) because of the runners which spread outward from the plant. The fruit came to be known as treabergen, straberry, streberie, straibery, straubery, and eventually, "strawberry" to the English.
